GSM & 4G Door Entry Systems

Intercoms that call your phone. No phone line, no WiFi, no cabling back to the building — answer the door or open the gate from anywhere.

What Is a GSM Intercom — and Why It Beats Hard-Wired Door Entry

A GSM intercom is a door or gate entry panel with a SIM card inside. When a visitor presses the button, the panel doesn't ring a handset on the wall — it makes a phone call over the mobile network to whatever numbers you choose. You answer on your mobile, speak to the visitor, and press a key on your phone to release the door or gate. If you don't pick up, the call diverts to the next number on the list.

That one design decision solves the problem that rules out traditional door entry on so many sites: cabling. A hard-wired intercom needs a cable run from the entrance to every handset, and often a phone line too. On a gated driveway, a farm entrance, a commercial yard or a block of flats being retrofitted, that cabling is disruptive, expensive or simply impossible. A GSM intercom system needs only two things at the entrance — power and mobile signal — which is why it belongs in SEG's remote connectivity family alongside our 4G-connected CCTV and ANPR services.

The second advantage is that you are no longer tied to a handset. A wired intercom only helps if someone is standing near it; a SIM card intercom reaches you wherever you are. Deliveries arrive while you're out, contractors turn up early, tenants lose fobs — with GSM and 4G door entry you take the call, verify the visitor and let them in from the office, the tractor cab or the beach. Security & Electrical Group Ltd supplies, installs and supports these systems across England, with the SIM and call plan managed by us as one monthly service.

GSM Gate Openers & Gate Intercoms

Automated gates are where GSM entry really earns its keep. Driveway gates, farm gates, yard barriers and compound entrances almost never have a phone line or network point nearby, and trenching one in can cost more than the gate automation itself. A GSM gate intercom mounts on a post at the entrance, wires into the gate controller's release input, and is live as soon as the SIM registers on the network.

A GSM gate opener gives you several ways in. Visitors press the call button and you open the gate from your phone during the call. Authorised users — family, staff, regular hauliers — get free dial-to-open: they ring the panel's number, it recognises the caller ID, opens the gate and rejects the call before it connects, so the call costs nothing. Panels with a built-in keypad add PIN codes for trades and deliveries, which you can change or delete whenever you like. Most units store hundreds of authorised numbers, so a whole workforce or a whole street of residents can share one entrance.

SEG installs GSM gate openers as part of new gate projects and retrofits them to existing automation — swing gates, sliding gates, barriers and bollards. Our engineers handle the panel, the power supply, the safe integration with your gate controller and the programming of every number, and because the SIM is ours to manage, adding or removing users later is a phone call to us, not a site visit.

GSM Video Intercoms & 4G Door Entry

Voice gets the job done, but sometimes you need to see who's there before you open up. A GSM video intercom — more precisely, a 4G door entry system — uses a mobile data connection instead of a voice call. The panel has a built-in camera, and when a visitor presses the button it places a video call to an app on your smartphone. You see the visitor, speak to them, and unlock the door or gate from the app, wherever you happen to be. The app keeps an event log of every call, answer and release, and many panels capture a snapshot of each visitor even when the call goes unanswered.

Choosing between voice-only GSM and 4G video comes down to what you need to know before you press unlock. For a family home gate where you recognise every caller's voice, a GSM intercom with voice calling is simple, cheap to run and works with any phone — no app, no smartphone required, which also suits older residents. Where you're screening unknown visitors — commercial yards after hours, high-value residential property, managed buildings — a 4G intercom with video is worth the slightly higher data cost, because seeing the caller and keeping a visual record changes the security picture entirely.

Both run on a managed SIM supplied by SEG. For video systems we size the data plan to intercom traffic — short video calls and snapshots are light, efficient machine data, which is exactly what our managed connectivity service is built around.

Integration with Access Control

A GSM or 4G intercom is rarely the whole answer on a commercial site — it's the perimeter layer of a wider access strategy. SEG is an experienced installer of Paxton access control systems, and we design the two to work together: GSM or 4G entry on the gate and front door, where visitors need to reach a human, and fob, token or PIN access on internal doors, where staff need to move freely without phones ringing.

The combination covers the awkward cases that a standalone system can't. A delivery driver arrives at 6pm: the gate intercom calls the duty manager's mobile, they release the gate remotely, and the driver still can't get beyond the loading bay because the internal doors are on fob control. A contractor needs access for one week: a temporary keypad code on the gate and a time-limited fob inside, both revoked the following Monday. Meanwhile the access control system logs every internal door event and the intercom logs every call and release, giving you an audit trail from the kerb to the comms room.

Because SEG installs the intercom, the access control, the CCTV covering the entrance and the connectivity behind all of it, there's one design, one installation team and one number to call — no gaps between suppliers for problems to fall into.

Blocks of Flats & Multi-Tenant Buildings

Multi-tenant door entry is where GSM makes retrofits practical. A conventional flat intercom needs a wiring riser from the front door to a handset in every flat — straightforward in a new build, miserable in an occupied Victorian conversion. A multi-button or digital-directory GSM panel replaces all of that: the visitor presses the button (or scrolls to the name) for flat 4, and the panel calls the mobile of whoever lives there. Each flat answers on their own phone and releases the door with a keypress. No riser, no handsets, no decorating bills, and residents can answer the door from the sofa or from work alike.

For managing agents and landlords, the day-to-day running is the real win. Tenants change, and with them their phone numbers — on a GSM door entry system that's a remote reprogramming job we do from our office, usually the same day, rather than an engineer visit or a new handset. Directory names update the same way. Trade buttons, postal access codes and time-restricted entry for cleaners are all standard features, and the panel keeps working through building works that would sever a wired system.

SEG installs multi-tenant GSM panels on blocks from four flats to forty-plus, for freeholders, managing agents and housing providers, with the SIM, call plan and all number changes wrapped into one predictable monthly service per building.

Managed SIM & Ongoing Support

You buy a working intercom service, not a box and a SIM contract. Everything below is one monthly fee — and the mobile network is our problem, not yours.

Intercom Panel & Installation

The GSM or 4G panel, power supply and connection to your door release or gate automation, installed by SEG's own DBS-checked engineers.

GSM & 4G Door Entry FAQs

A GSM intercom has a SIM card inside the panel, just like a mobile phone. When a visitor presses the call button, the panel dials your phone number over the mobile network — you answer on your mobile or landline, speak to the visitor, and press a key on your phone's keypad to release the door or gate. All the panel needs is power and mobile signal; there is no wiring between the entrance and your house or office.

No. That is exactly why they exist. A GSM intercom needs only a power supply at the entrance and mobile network coverage — no phone line, no WiFi and no network cable back to the building. This makes them ideal for gated driveways, farm gates, yards and remote entrances where running cabling would be disruptive or impossible. We test signal strength at your entrance as part of the free survey.

Yes. GSM gate intercoms include relay outputs that connect directly to your gate automation, so you can release the gate from your phone during a call. Most units also support free dial-to-open: authorised numbers ring the panel, it recognises the caller ID, opens the gate and rejects the call, so nobody is charged. We integrate with existing gate motors as well as supplying new panels.

Yes — that is the core benefit. Because the panel calls a phone number rather than a fixed handset on the wall, you can answer from anywhere: at work, on holiday or on the other side of the site. Panels can call several numbers in sequence, so if the first person doesn't answer, the call diverts to the next. Video models use an app, so you can also see the visitor before deciding to let them in.

A voice-only GSM intercom makes an ordinary phone call, so it works with any mobile or landline and needs no app or data plan on your side. A 4G video door entry system uses a mobile data connection to make app-based video calls to your smartphone, letting you see the visitor, speak to them and unlock remotely, with a log of every call and entry. Video costs a little more to run but is worth it where you need to verify who is at the entrance.

You don't need your own contract. SEG supplies the intercom with a managed SIM and call or data plan included in one monthly service, and we own and manage the SIM estate. That means no separate mobile contract to run, no topping up pay-as-you-go SIMs, and when a phone number changes we reprogramme the panel remotely as part of the service.
