Traditional ANPR pipes video from every camera back to a recorder or server, which then does the plate reading. That architecture needs serious bandwidth, a powered cabinet with a DVR or server on site, and usually a fixed line — three things many car parks don't have and don't want to pay for. Our number plate recognition cameras work the other way round: the plate is read at the camera, by processing on the camera itself. What leaves the camera is the result — a plate number, a timestamp, a direction and a confirmation image — not a video stream.

The consequences are what make the economics work. Each vehicle movement is a few kilobytes of data, so a busy car park generates a tiny fraction of the traffic a CCTV stream would. That means the entire system runs over an industrial 4G/5G router with a managed data plan — machine data, not office internet — with no DVR on site, no comms room, and no dependency on a fixed line at all. A surface car park behind a pub, a retail park overflow area, a residential block with no spare duct into the building: all of them can have a fully managed ANPR parking system live within days of the survey.

The camera reads the plate on approach, checks it against a whitelist, and raises the barrier for permitted vehicles before the driver has stopped.
