ANPR installation is one of those jobs where the difference between a good installer and a poor one shows up in a single number: the read rate. A number plate recognition camera that has been surveyed, mounted and commissioned properly will read plates reliably day and night for years. The same camera bolted on at the wrong height or angle will miss vehicles, misread characters and cause disputes from day one. One important distinction before we go further. Site Survey & Camera Positioning: What Makes or Breaks ANPR Accuracy

Reading a number plate is a much narrower task than general CCTV surveillance, and it is far less forgiving of poor positioning. These are the factors our survey works through — and the reason a survey happens before we quote, not after we install.

Mounting height and angle. The camera needs a clear, near-straight-on view of the plate. For a single-lane entrance that usually means a mounting height of 2–3 metres, with the vertical angle to the plate kept below roughly 30 degrees and the horizontal angle as shallow as possible. Higher mounting resists tampering but foreshortens the plate; the survey finds the balance for your entrance.

Distance and lane width. Every ANPR camera has an optimal capture distance for its lens, and a plate must occupy enough pixels in the image to be read — as a rule of thumb, the plate characters need to be tall enough in the image that the recognition engine can distinguish a B from an 8 in poor light. Wide entrances may need the capture point narrowed with kerbing or signage, or a second camera.

One capture zone per lane. A single camera reads one lane reliably. Two-way entrances need a camera per direction; multi-lane entries need a camera per lane, each with its own defined capture zone so vehicles can't slip through between fields of view.

Headlight glare and IR illumination. At night the camera relies on infrared light reflecting off the plate's retro-reflective surface. Position the camera badly and oncoming headlights flood the image instead. We position and configure cameras — shutter speed, IR intensity, angle relative to approaching traffic — so plates stay readable when a vehicle approaches on full beam.

Vehicle speed. A camera set up for a barrier where vehicles crawl past will miss plates on a free-flow entrance where traffic passes at 30 mph. Expected speed drives shutter settings and capture-zone length, so we establish it during the survey rather than guessing.

Dedicated vs dual-purpose cameras. Some sites want one camera to do both plate reading and general surveillance. It can work at low speeds over short distances, but the exposure settings that make a plate readable often darken the rest of the scene. Where both jobs matter we'll usually recommend a dedicated ANPR camera plus an overview camera — and we'll show you the difference at survey stage rather than let you discover it later.

Edge Processing vs Server-Based ANPR

There are two ways to build an ANPR system. The older approach streams continuous video from the camera to a server or DVR on site, where software extracts the plates. The modern approach — and the one SEG installs — does the recognition at the camera itself. The camera watches its capture zone, reads the plate on board, and transmits just the result: plate text, a timestamp, a confidence score and a snapshot image.

That architectural choice has practical consequences. A plate read is a few kilobytes; a continuous video stream is gigabytes per day. Edge processing means there is no server or DVR to buy, house, power and maintain on site, and no full-time video streaming eating bandwidth. It is also better data protection practice: instead of recording everything that passes and processing it centrally, the system captures the minimum data needed to do its job — which sits far more comfortably with UK GDPR data minimisation principles.

Most importantly for many of our clients, edge processing is what makes ANPR viable on sites with no fixed line at all. Because only reads are transmitted, an edge-processed ANPR camera runs happily over a managed 4G connection — which is why ANPR installation sits within SEG's remote connectivity service, and why we can put working number plate recognition on a rural car park, a farm gate or a compound entrance that will never get broadband.

Connectivity Options: Fixed Line or 4G/5G

Where your site has an existing network or fixed-line broadband, we simply connect the ANPR cameras to it — our engineers run the cabling, configure the network and make sure camera traffic is properly segregated and secured. For many gated sites and buildings this is the straightforward option, and there is nothing extra to pay monthly for connectivity.

Where there is no connection — a standalone car park, a field gateway, a compound entrance — we install an industrial 4G/5G router with a managed SIM and data plan as part of the job. Because edge-processed ANPR transmits only plate reads and snapshots, the data usage is modest and predictable: this is machine data, not office internet, and the plan is sized accordingly. The router, SIM, data, monitoring and support are bundled into one monthly managed service, and we carry out a signal survey before quoting so you know the connection will hold up before any hardware is ordered.

Either way, connectivity is designed in at survey stage — not bolted on when someone realises the entrance is 400 metres from the nearest network point.

Read-Rate Testing

We run real vehicles and live traffic through the capture zone and measure the read rate — in daylight, at night under IR, and where possible in poor weather — against the plates that actually passed.

Ongoing Maintenance & Support

ANPR accuracy degrades quietly. A film of road grime on the lens, a bracket nudged by a wind-loaded pole, a mounting knocked by a high-sided vehicle — each shaves a few percent off the read rate, and nobody notices until the missed reads start causing arguments. A maintained system stays at the read rate it was commissioned at; an unmaintained one drifts.

SEG offers planned maintenance for every ANPR system we install: scheduled lens cleaning, checks and realignment of camera positioning, firmware updates for the cameras and any routers, and a review of read performance against the commissioning baseline. On 4G/5G-connected sites we also monitor the connection itself, so a dropped SIM or failing antenna gets picked up and fixed — usually before you're aware anything happened.

ANPR Installation FAQs

For a typical single-lane entrance, an ANPR camera is usually mounted between 2 and 3 metres high, positioned so the downward angle to the number plate stays below roughly 30 degrees. Mount it too high and the plate becomes foreshortened and hard to read; too low and it is vulnerable to tampering and headlight glare. The right height for your site depends on capture distance, lane width and vehicle types, which is exactly what our site survey works out.

A properly surveyed, positioned and commissioned edge-processed ANPR camera should read comfortably over 95% of plates in normal conditions, and well-set-up single-lane installations often exceed 98%. The figure depends far more on installation quality — height, angle, distance, illumination and vehicle speed — than on the camera itself, which is why we test and tune read rates as part of commissioning rather than just fitting the camera and leaving.

Yes. In most cases we add a dedicated ANPR camera alongside your existing system rather than trying to repurpose an overview camera, because general CCTV cameras are rarely positioned or configured to read plates reliably. We can usually reuse your existing cabling routes, network and power, so adding plate recognition to an established CCTV installation is often a quick, low-disruption job.

Yes — reading plates in the dark is core to how ANPR works. UK number plates are retro-reflective, so the camera's built-in infrared illumination bounces straight back off the plate, giving a high-contrast image even on an unlit site. Heavy rain, fog and low sun are more challenging, which is why we test reads across day, night and poor-weather conditions during commissioning and adjust shutter and illumination settings accordingly.

It depends on the application. Because we install edge-processed cameras, the plate is read at the camera itself, so a simple standalone task like opening a barrier for an approved plate list can run locally. Anything involving a cloud platform, remote lists, reporting or enforcement needs a data connection — but plate reads are tiny amounts of data, so where there is no fixed line we install an industrial 4G/5G router with a managed data plan instead.

A typical single-entrance installation — one camera, mounting, power, connectivity and commissioning — is completed in a day on site. A multi-lane car park with several cameras, signage and barrier integration usually takes two to three days. Before any installation we carry out a free site survey, and after installation we run commissioning and accuracy tests before handover.
