The sites that most need CCTV are usually the ones with the least infrastructure. Farms, construction compounds, storage yards, car parks, substations and rural properties are left unwatched precisely because there's no broadband to connect a camera system to — and running a new line to a field gateway or a temporary compound rarely makes sense. This is CCTV without WiFi, without a phone line and, where necessary, without mains power. Every system is built on the same platform as our wider remote connectivity service: an industrial-grade 4G/5G router with a SIM and data plan that we own and manage, delivered as one monthly fee covering hardware, installation, data, monitoring and support. There is no separate SIM contract to run, and no mobile network to argue with — if the connection misbehaves, that's our problem, not yours.

And because SEG has installed and maintained commercial CCTV systems for over 25 years, the cameras themselves are specified by people who do this for a living — the right lenses, mounting heights, low-light performance and detection zones for your site, not a boxed kit pointed vaguely at a gate.

The question everyone asks about a 4G CCTV camera system is data. The answer is architecture. A badly designed system streams every camera to the cloud around the clock and burns through hundreds of gigabytes a month; a well-designed one records everything at the site and sends only what matters over the mobile network — short event clips when a detection fires, alert notifications, system health checks, and live video only when someone actually opens the app to look. Configured this way, a multi-camera site typically uses a few gigabytes a month, and our managed data plans are sized around that reality.

This is the same edge-processing approach behind our ANPR car park systems, where the camera reads the number plate on site and transmits a few kilobytes of results rather than a video stream. The intelligence lives at the edge; the 4G connection carries conclusions, not raw footage. When an incident does need reviewing in full, the complete recording is there on site at original quality — retrievable remotely on demand or exported during a visit.

We'll be straight about the limits, because it's a genuine differentiator: continuous off-site streaming of every camera is not what 4G data plans are for, and anyone selling it that way is setting you up for a bill shock. Industrial mobile data is priced for machine data. Design the system around that fact — as we do — and 4G CCTV is reliable, responsive and predictable in cost.

Plenty of the places that need watching have no power at all — field gateways, fly-tipping hotspots, isolated compounds, land vulnerable to traveller incursion. For these we build solar CCTV camera packages: a pole- or trailer-mounted unit combining low-power cameras, a solar array, a battery bank and the 4G connection, fully self-contained and installed without trenching a single cable. Off-grid CCTV like this can be deployed almost anywhere you can stand a pole.

The honest engineering is in the sizing. A solar system specified for a July brochure photo will be dead by November, so we size panels and batteries for UK winter conditions — several days of battery autonomy to ride out dull weather, panel angles and siting chosen for low winter sun, and clear of tree shading that halves output. Camera count and features are chosen with the power budget in mind; a solar site is not the place for a dozen heaters and floodlights.

Solar isn't always the right answer, and we'll say so at survey. Sites needing many cameras, continuous infrared at long range, or guaranteed operation through the darkest weeks may be better served by a mains spur, a metered supply to a pole, or a generator feed — and as an electrical contractor as well as a security installer, SEG can carry out that electrical work ourselves rather than leaving you to find a second trade.

Farm CCTV has to work across distances and darkness that would defeat a domestic kit. Rural crime targets the predictable: fuel tanks, machinery and tool stores, GPS units left in tractor cabs, trailers, quad bikes and livestock — usually at night, usually via the same gateway every time. We design farm systems around those realities: cameras on the farmyard and building entrances, dedicated views on fuel and chemical stores, and long-range coverage of access tracks and gateways so a vehicle is seen and recorded well before it reaches the yard.

Camera choice does the heavy lifting. Varifocal and long-range lenses read a vehicle at a gateway hundreds of metres out; modern low-light sensors from the manufacturers we install — Axis, Dahua and Hikvision — produce usable colour images from moonlight, with infrared and thermal options for total darkness. Analytics filter out the deer, foxes and barn cats that plague rural motion detection, so an alert at 3am means something worth waking up for. Livestock views earn their keep beyond security too — many of our farm clients use the same cameras to check calving pens and lambing sheds from the kitchen.

Connectivity that fails on farms with poor mobile signal is the common objection, and it's solvable: our free signal survey tests every network at the site, and an external directional antenna mounted on a barn gable or pole almost always turns a marginal signal into a stable connection. Heritage and estate properties get the same treatment, with siting and fixings chosen to respect the fabric of the building.
