A 4G router with a SIM does one simple thing: it gives your equipment an internet connection through the mobile network instead of a phone line. Put a data SIM in the router, connect your cameras, sensors or controllers to it, and their data travels over 4G or 5G exactly as it would over fibre. For sites with no fixed line — car parks, farms, compounds, substations — it turns a months-long connectivity problem into a single-day installation. One thing we say plainly on every quote: this is connectivity for machine data, not office internet. Data on an industrial router is priced for what equipment actually sends — ANPR events, camera clips, sensor readings, door entry calls — not for a workforce streaming and browsing all day. That discipline is precisely why the service is so cost-effective: correctly specified equipment uses a fraction of the data people assume, and we size the plan to match rather than selling you an "unlimited" tariff you'll never use.

The difference between a connection that quietly works for years and one that generates call-outs is almost never the SIM — it's the router grade, the antenna, and who's watching the connection. Those three things are the core of this service, and this page explains each one.

What Is an Industrial 4G Router — and Why Not Just Use a MiFi?

A domestic sim card router or pocket MiFi will get a laptop online. It will not survive a year in a steel cabinet on an unmanned site. An industrial router is a different class of device.

The result is a device designed for 24/7 unattended operation. A domestic router that locks up gets rebooted by whoever is standing next to it. On a remote site there is no one standing next to it — which is why every element above matters.

The Managed Data Plan — What "Managed" Actually Means

Plenty of suppliers will sell you a router and leave you to find a SIM. We do the opposite: SEG owns and manages the entire SIM estate, and the SIM in your router is ours to look after. That distinction changes what happens when something goes wrong — and what happens every month when nothing does.

Sizing. Before installation we work out what your equipment will genuinely send: an edge-processed ANPR camera transmits kilobyte-scale event records, an event-driven CCTV system sends short clips, a sensor network sends a trickle of readings. We size the data plan to that real usage — machine data, not office browsing — so you're not paying for headroom you'll never touch.

Monitoring. Once live, we monitor both data consumption and connection health continuously. If a camera develops a fault and starts uploading constantly, we see the usage spike and investigate before it becomes a problem. If the connection drops, we usually know before you do.

Network issues. If a mobile network has a problem at your site, we deal with it — swapping networks, adjusting configuration or attending site as needed. You never phone a mobile operator's call centre about a SIM you don't hold the account for.

One fee. Router hardware, the SIM and data plan, antenna, installation, monitoring and support are bundled into a single monthly fee. No upfront hardware purchase, no separate airtime contract, no split responsibility between an installer and a connectivity provider.

4G Antennas & Signal Surveys — Where Reliable Connections Are Won

Here is the unglamorous truth of this trade: the antenna matters more than the router. The best industrial router in the country cannot make a connection out of signal that isn't there — and routers on real sites live inside steel cabinets, plant rooms and metal-clad buildings that attenuate mobile signal severely. The small paddle antennas supplied in the box are adequate on a desk by a window; they are frequently useless inside an equipment cabinet.

An external 4G antenna, mounted at height and cabled back to the router, transforms the picture. We specify two main types. Directional antennas concentrate gain towards a specific mast — the right choice on fringe-coverage rural sites where every decibel counts. Omnidirectional antennas receive from all directions, suiting sites with reasonable coverage from several masts, and working better with dual-SIM setups where the two networks' masts sit in different directions. Mounting height, clear line of sight, quality low-loss coaxial cable and properly weatherproofed connections all affect performance, which is why our own engineers handle the antenna installation and cable runs rather than leaving it to whoever is on site.

Crucially, we do the measurement before we quote. Our free signal survey tests 4G and 5G signal strength and quality across multiple mobile networks at the actual location where the router and antenna will live — not from a coverage map, which tells you very little about the inside of your cabinet. The survey determines which network the primary SIM goes on, which antenna is specified, and where it mounts. If a site genuinely can't support a reliable connection, we tell you that before you've spent anything.

Private APN & Secure Connectivity

A standard mobile data SIM reaches the internet the same way a phone does — perfectly serviceable for many applications, but not appropriate for all of them. A private APN (Access Point Name) changes the architecture: your SIMs are placed on a private, isolated segment of the mobile network, with fixed private IP addresses, and traffic flows between your sites and your systems without ever being exposed to the public internet. Devices on a private APN cannot be scanned, probed or attacked from the outside, because from the outside they simply aren't there.

We recommend a private APN wherever the connection touches something genuinely sensitive: critical national infrastructure such as electricity substations and water treatment sites, payment systems where card data compliance applies, and any router that connects back into a corporate network — because a compromised remote router with a route into your LAN is exactly the kind of quiet back door security teams lose sleep over. Fixed private IPs also make fleets of remote sites far easier to manage and monitor centrally.

Where a full private APN is more than the application needs, we secure connections with IPsec or similar VPN tunnels from the router to your systems or ours, encrypting everything in transit, alongside sensible router hardening: no exposed management interfaces, strong credentials and maintained firmware. Security is specified per application, honestly — we'll tell you when a standard configuration with a VPN is enough, and when it isn't.

Failover Internet & Backup Internet Connections

Not every site we connect lacks a fixed line. Many premises have perfectly good broadband — and a list of systems that must not go down when it fails. A dual-WAN industrial router provides failover internet: the fixed line carries traffic normally, the router continuously checks that it's actually working, and the moment it fails, traffic switches to 4G/5G automatically — typically within seconds, with no one touching anything. When the line recovers, the router switches back on its own.

Consistent with everything else on this page, we design failover around critical systems, not general office traffic. The systems that genuinely can't tolerate an outage are machine systems: card payment terminals that stop taking money the moment the line drops, intruder alarm and fire signalling paths, CCTV and remote monitoring links, door entry and access control that authenticates against a server. A backup internet connection scoped to those systems needs only a modest data plan — it may transmit almost nothing for months — yet it removes the single point of failure that turns a street-level cable strike into a day of lost trade.

Because the failover path is a fully managed SEG connection, it's monitored like every other router we install. We know when your site has failed over — which also means we know your fixed line has gone down, often before your broadband provider does.

Industrial 4G/5G Router FAQs

A 4G SIM router is a router that connects to the internet through the mobile network instead of a phone line — a SIM card inside the router works exactly as it would in a phone, but the router shares that connection with wired equipment. Your cameras, sensors or controllers plug into the router (usually via a network switch) just as they would into any network, and their data travels over 4G or 5G to wherever it needs to go. To the equipment, it's indistinguishable from a fixed line.

An industrial router is built for 24/7 unattended operation in harsh environments: a metal enclosure rather than plastic, an operating temperature range that copes with an unheated cabinet in winter and full sun in summer, DIN-rail mounting, dual-SIM failover, and a hardware watchdog that automatically restarts the connection if it hangs. A domestic router or MiFi unit will work on a desk for a while, but on an unmanned site the first lock-up means a wasted engineer visit — or days of downtime before anyone notices.

Very often, yes. Routers on remote sites usually live inside steel cabinets or plant rooms, which block mobile signal significantly. An external 4G antenna mounted at height — on a pole, wall or roof — routinely turns an unusable connection into a strong, stable one. Our pre-quote signal survey measures signal at the actual router location across multiple networks, so we know before installation whether an external antenna is needed and which type will perform best.

A private APN places your SIMs on a private, isolated segment of the mobile network with fixed private IP addresses, so your equipment is never exposed to the public internet. Most CCTV and sensor applications are well served by standard secure configurations with VPN encryption, but a private APN is the right choice for critical national infrastructure such as substations, payment systems, and routers that connect into corporate networks. We'll advise honestly on which your application needs.

Yes. A dual-WAN industrial router uses your fixed line as the primary connection and switches to 4G/5G automatically — typically within seconds — if the line fails, then switches back when it recovers. Far less than most people expect. IoT sensors and telemetry often use a few megabytes a month; ANPR systems doing edge processing send small event records rather than video; event-driven CCTV transmits short clips rather than continuous streams. We size the data plan from your equipment's real behaviour, monitor actual consumption once the site is live, and adjust the plan if usage changes — that's part of what the managed service means.

Yes — where 5G coverage exists at your site we can specify a 5G router and the connection will use it, falling back to 4G automatically where needed. That said, machine data rarely requires 5G bandwidth: a good 4G connection comfortably runs CCTV, ANPR and sensor networks. We specify 5G where the application or the site's coverage picture justifies it, not as a default upsell.
