Access control repair: rapid diagnosis when doors won't open (or worse, won't close)
When an access control system goes wrong, door held open all night, reader unresponsive, controller offline, software refusing logins, mag lock dropped because of a tripped supply, SEG Ltd attends fast and fixes properly. We work on every major manufacturer: Paxton Net2 and Paxton10, Salto, ACT, Inner Range, Honeywell, Suprema, plus a long list of legacy standalone units. The first thing we'll do on the phone is try to narrow the fault: many issues are resolved with a quick reset, a credentials re-pair, or a software user fix without anyone needing to attend site.
Common faults we repair include power-supply failure on a controller or mag lock (often the obvious symptom: the door has stopped securing), reader read failures (could be the credential, the reader, or the wiring), controller comms loss (DHCP, switch, or controller itself), software user/permission issues, REX (request-to-exit) sensors stuck open, door closers no longer self-closing, push-to-exit buttons mechanically failed, and broken break-glass overrides. Most of these are repairable in a single visit; a few need parts ordered and a second visit, in which case we propose interim safety arrangements (locked override, manual key control) until the fix lands.
Our diagnostic visit fee covers attendance and fault identification. If the repair can be completed in the same visit you only pay for parts plus the additional time. If a component is at end-of-life or no longer manufactured we'll quote a like-for-like or upgrade path, and credit the diagnostic fee against the replacement. No "while-you're-here" upsells.
Common access control faults we repair
Door won't release on valid card
Could be reader read failure, controller comms, lock-power blown fuse, or a software user permission issue. Diagnosis works through the chain in order, usually identified within twenty minutes on site.
Door won't secure / held open
Mag lock supply tripped, electric strike physically jammed, door closer failed, mis-adjusted contact sensor reporting "open" permanently. We diagnose, replace components as needed, restore secure state.
Reader unresponsive
Power, comms, or hardware. We test the reader's voltage on its supply pins, the data line against the controller, and the controller's recognition of the reader being present, then replace what's faulty.
Controller offline
Network path (switch, PoE, DHCP, IP conflict), controller hardware, or upstream software server. We restore comms and diagnose the underlying cause so it doesn't recur.
Software / database faults
Net2 or Paxton10 cloud account issues, user lockouts, group permission corruption, scheduled-task failures. We restore from the most recent backup if needed and rebuild affected configuration.
REX / push-to-exit failure
Sensor stuck on, button mechanically broken, supply or signal loss. Diagnosis is fast and replacement parts are usually held in van stock.
How a repair call works
1. Call us
Describe the symptoms, which door, which behaviour, when it started, what's working. We'll either talk you through a fix on the phone or book a diagnostic visit, usually within one to two working days.
2. Site diagnostic
An engineer attends with a van stocked with the common spare parts. Most faults are identified within the first hour.
3. Fix or quote
If repairable on the spot, we complete it and charge time plus parts. If we need ordered parts or a like-for-like replacement, you get a clear quote and any necessary interim safety arrangement before anything is committed.
Access control repair FAQs
Most non-emergency access faults are attended within one to two working days. Emergency calls (door insecure during a busy trading period, full system down on a high-risk site) are next-day or same-day depending on engineer availability, and we'll talk you through an interim safety arrangement on the phone.
Yes, the majority of our repair work is on third-party-installed systems. Paxton, Salto, ACT, Inner Range, Honeywell, Suprema, plus most legacy standalone units. If you don't know what brand you have, send a photo of the controller and we'll usually identify it before we attend.
If it's during a busy trading period or the building is unattended, the safest interim is to manually lock the door with a mechanical key (most doors have an override) and disable the access reader. Call us first thing and we'll attend same-day or next-day. Don't tape over the contact, that creates a false-secure state in the system log.
We'll tell you honestly. Some older standalone units have no spares available and patching them stops making sense beyond a certain point. In those cases we'll quote a like-for-like or upgrade replacement (typically a small Net2 or Paxton10 system) alongside the repair cost so you can choose.
