Net2 repair: diagnosed before quoted
Net2 controller and reader fault resolution. Authorised Paxton installer.
Fixing Net2 systems when something has gone wrong
When a Net2 access control system fails, doors not releasing on a valid token, a reader gone dead, a Net2 Plus controller dropped off the network, the Net2 software refusing to open, audit events not appearing, SEG Ltd attends across London, Kent, Essex and Surrey to diagnose and repair. We work on Net2 systems we installed and on Net2 systems installed by other contractors who are no longer responsive.
Net2 has a relatively narrow set of recurring fault classes. Comms loss is the most common cause of a controller "going offline", usually a switch/PoE issue, a DHCP lease change, or a cable strain on the RJ45 termination, not the controller itself. Reader faults often turn out to be cable rather than reader: a damaged conductor, water ingress at an external installation, or a poor termination on the controller side. Software-side faults, Net2 won't open, Net2 service won't start, database read errors, usually trace back to a Windows update, antivirus quarantine of the Net2 service, or a corrupt SQL LocalDB instance that needs repair.
Our standard repair flow is diagnostic-first. We arrive with a Net2 PRO laptop, multimeter, network test kit and a stock of common Paxton spares (Net2 Nano units, proximity readers, REX sensors, replacement PSUs). On site we replicate the fault, identify the failed component, and complete the fix in the same visit where parts are in van stock. Contact us on 0330 133 9801 if you've got a Net2 system down.
Common Net2 faults we repair
Door not releasing on a valid token
Usually a relay timing issue, a stuck door contact, a misconfigured access level, or a lock hardware fault. We work through each layer using Net2's live event log rather than guessing.
Reader offline / red LED of doom
Cable damage, water at the reader pigtail, a damaged controller port, or a reader firmware fault. We swap to a known-good reader on a test cable to isolate the issue.
Net2 Plus / Nano dropped off the network
Comms loss: DHCP change, switch fault, cable break or a controller hardware fault. Diagnostic always starts with a network test, not a controller swap.
Net2 software won't open or won't start
Antivirus has quarantined the Net2 service, a Windows update has broken SQL LocalDB, or the database file has a corruption. We repair or restore from backup.
Audit events missing or wrong time
Usually a Windows time service issue, an unsynced controller, or a controller that has reverted to factory time after a power cut. Quick fix once identified.
Fire-interface not releasing doors on alarm
Safety-critical. We test the BS 7273-4 path back from the fire panel and fix the broken link, relay, cable, controller input or panel output.
How a Net2 repair visit works
1. Triage on the phone
Describe the symptoms when you call. We can often narrow the fault before the engineer arrives, saving you time and us a return trip for the right parts.
2. Site diagnostic
Engineer attends with PRO laptop, network kit and a stocked van of Paxton spares. Fault replicated on site, root cause identified, fix completed where parts are available.
3. Test & sign-off
We test the repaired door or reader through the full event cycle, confirm the Net2 audit log shows the expected entries, and document what was done. Customer signs off before we leave.
Net2 repair FAQs
For a system-down call (e.g. nobody can get in or out, fire interface not working) we aim for same-working-day attendance where engineer availability permits. For non-critical faults (e.g. one reader of many not reading), 1–2 working days is typical. Tell us the urgency when you call.
Yes, most of our Net2 repair work is on systems we didn't originally install. We don't need any handover from the previous engineer; the Net2 software exposes everything we need to diagnose the system. If you don't have admin credentials we can usually recover or reset them on site.
We stock the common Paxton failure parts (Net2 Nano controllers, proximity readers, REX sensors, PSUs, common cable types). Less common items (Net2 Plus controllers, KeyPad TouchScreen, specific lock hardware) are usually ordered same-day from our Paxton distributor and fitted on a return visit within 1–3 working days.
Usually yes. Net2 takes a nightly database backup by default; if that backup is intact we restore from it. Where backups have been off or are also corrupted we use the Paxton database repair tools to rebuild the database from the controller memory, which retains the user list and access levels.
